INTERACTIVE THEMATIC MAPS

The layer view is configured differently depending on the screen resolution: expanded on the desktop to facilitate immediate interaction and collapsed by default on mobile devices, to optimize visual space. Expanding and collapsing layers is done by activating the dedicated icon, positioned in the upper right corner (under the title).
In areas where the information is more concentrated, at a larger map scale, displaying and accessing individual points would be impossible. Instead, a cluster appears - a larger symbol, which displays the number of points it concentrates. When zoomed in, the cluster fragments into smaller clusters or individual points, and when clicked, it displays the associated information. The efficiency of data access can be improved by temporarily disabling some currently unused layers.

European Classical Painting

European classical painting:
currents, styles, genres (a selection)

Classical painting is organized into layers corresponding to artistic movements. Artistic movements in European painting, their chronology and the significance of classifying paintings into movements, styles and genres.
The markers on the map indicate significant places for the painters' work. For artists active in more than one area, a single landmark was chosen. List of artists / works presented in the personal selection.
When interacting with the markers, the name of the painter with the period of his life and some brief information about him is displayed in the popup, the title of one of the representative paintings (in Romanian and the original title, in the painter's native language), its image, some data about it (year of painting, materials - support and paints -, size in centimeters and where it is currently located), the source of the image, the type of license of the image and its attribution.
The displayed image can be enlarged by accessing the "Source" link, which opens the work in a separate window, or, in the case of a touch screen, also by gestures.
More recent artistic trends and styles are not included due to legal and financial implications related to copyright.

European Classical Music

European classical music:
currents, styles, genres (a selection)

Classical music is organized into layers related to artistic movements.
Artistic movements in music, their chronology and the significance of structuring works into movements, styles, genres.
The markers on the map indicate significant places for each composer - the origin or one of the places where he carried out his artistic activity. List of composers / works presented in the personal selection.
Interaction with the bookmarks displays the name, period of life and brief information about the composer, the title of one of his representative works, an integrated audio player that can play the work (or a fragment of it), some data about the work, the source of the sound file, the type of license and the attribution for it.
With great regret, I have omitted important authors and wonderful works, especially from the Romanian space, because I have not been able to discover sources of royalty-free audio files. For the same reason, more recent artistic trends and styles are not presented either.

Popular traditions

Popular traditions:
clothes, music and dance (a selection)

This interactive map dedicated to Romanian folk traditions brings together a selection of costumes, music and dances, documented through video materials published on the Internet under a Creative Commons license (reuse is permitted). Although the selection is limited by the availability of resources with the right to reuse, the work manages to capture the stylistic diversity of the Romanian space.
We express our gratitude to the creators who have chosen to share these cultural treasures, offering the opportunity to illustrate — even partially — the richness of our intangible heritage.

Romania's population at the censuses: 1977, 1992, 2002 and 2011

Romania's population at the censuses:
1977, 1992, 2002, 2011 and 2021

The interactive map highlights the dynamics of Romania's population over the last four decades, covering the period between the 1977 and 2021 censuses, capitalizing on the stability of the current administrative organization.
The population is classified into 5 distinct categories related to the degree of population, allowing a hierarchy of counties according to their share in the national total. The map uses the representation through cartograms (choropleth maps), structured on five thresholds of chromatic intensity that highlight territorial disparities: from pale shades for administrative units with a low demographic density, to intense colors for population concentration poles.
Selecting any county instantly generates a column chart that summarizes the values recorded in the 1977, 1992, 2002, 2011 and 2021 censuses. The Trend Line superimposed over the columns highlights the evolutionary vector (growth, decline or stagnation).
